There are several systems bearing the name Galileo (Galileo) - this is satellite navigation, and a ticket booking system, the same name is the NASA probe. This article will also discuss the modern computer for divers bearing this name.

Many consider the very appearance of such a device on the market as a revolution in diving. Today it is the only device in the world that meets European standards for working at depths of up to 330 meters.

Ever since the announcement, Galileo has become overgrown with rumors and myths. Let's take a look at the main misconceptions about the Galileo dive computer.

Galileo only supports three nitrox blends, so it is useless for true tech divers. There is a stereotype in society that the diving computer claims as a device with a pre-approved set of functions. The situation with Galileo is completely different. In underwater instruments, finally, a real computer approach has appeared - corresponding mathematics and programs appear to the existing hardware. Regarding the mentioned myth, we can talk about the limitations of a certain version of the computer's firmware. Indeed, the basic configuration of the device really supports only three mixtures, but nothing prevents you from downloading a new firmware that will support a larger number of mixtures, including gel ones. It should be noted that for the majority of tech divers, basic firmware is enough - for it has, for example, a meter mode, other Galileo capabilities that are not available in devices of this class.

Galileo is a raw product, therefore it should be used no earlier than a year or two after entering the market. This myth is an echo of the past, when manufacturers recalled their computers when they found errors in them. Users were asked to either stop using them or wait for a replacement for a new model. This is not the case with Galileo. Firstly, the basic firmware itself has already been tested on SmartTec and AladinTec 2G computers, and secondly, errors in this computer can be corrected by the user himself, who only needs to download the patch from the manufacturer's website.

The device is quite expensive, its functionality is not worth it. Everything in the world is relative, if you compare the price of Galileo with devices of this class, you find that the price in some places is even lower than that of analogues. How many competitors can boast an infrared port and digital compass? It is worth taking into account the fact that the equipment will become obsolete sooner or later, and the user will want to purchase a newer model, this approach is applicable to cars, computers, household appliances. But the manufacturer, Uwatec, has provided such an opportunity! Nothing stands in the way of increasing Galileo's power by constantly updating the firmware. The new software makes it possible to successfully integrate all new items into work, including hardware (new sensors, devices). It should also be noted that these devices are assembled in Switzerland, undergoing increased control over the performance of all operations, both individually and in combination. The highest reliability, admittedly, comes at a price. Uwatec specialists developed a technology for filling the hull with oil, as a result of which Galileo's work was achieved at depths of up to 330 meters. These capabilities are unique for devices of this class. Other manufacturers' equipment has a much higher failure rate, so the choice for divers is obvious. It is for Galileo that the wisdom is true: "we are not such rich people to buy cheap things", fully consistent with the entire philosophy of diving. The real price for the basic Galileo kit, which includes a heart rate sensor, transmitter and case, is less than $ 1,500, which is not at all expensive for a device of this class and design.

The cardiac sensor will not be able to work in breadcrumbs. To debunk this myth, the manufacturer simply tested Galileo in the pool. The sensor has been proven to work correctly both in a wet suit and in a biscuit. So this myth has no practical basis.

Deep stops are not supported by the computer. "Deep stops" is just a buzzword. By themselves, they are not even subject to any of the decompression algorithms. It has recently been found that using deep stops during the ascent will reduce the amount of nitrogen microbubbles in the diver's blood. As a result of these experiments, a simple rule was developed - when ascending, it is recommended to make intermediate stops for 1-2 minutes about half the way, this will increase the safety of the ascent. Most manufacturers do not pay attention to this option in devices. The user decides for himself whether or not to enable such a mode and how long it will last - 1 or 2 minutes. In the case of Galileo, the manufacturer approached this issue extremely responsibly. Uwatec conducted its own research into the microbubble suppression algorithm, and these results were incorporated into the decompression algorithm for the instrument. The user is offered to choose one of five safety levels, and the computer, in accordance with the real dive profile, will itself give recommendations for making safety stops. Their depth and duration depend entirely on the diver's dive profile. Interestingly, safety stops are then not required to suppress microbubbles, unlike decompression stops. If the diver misses the stop, the computer automatically lowers the safety level and makes appropriate changes in the general decompression calculation. It can really be assumed that Galileo does not support the deep stops rule, in fact, the computer uses its own algorithm to prevent microbubbles from appearing.

The computer uses a rare type of battery, so replacing it is very problematic. The Galileo uses a CR2NP or CR12600SE lithium battery and the transmitters use a CR2450. Such devices are produced by different manufacturers and are not at all rare, as they are used in various common devices, including cameras. It would be naive to want to find such a battery on street trays, but you can easily find it in specialized stores. Uwatec dealers also supply a special kit that includes an extra battery with O-rings.

Galileo software is expensive. This statement cannot be applied to all computer software. The fact is that all programs for Galileo can be divided into two groups. One of them includes completely free samples (localized firmware, fixes, etc.). But paid products include specialized firmware, for example, a program for trimix mixtures. Such products will always be paid until real prices are indicated, however Uwatec promises to make its offer real and affordable. It should be understood that most divers will not need these firmware, but those people who really need them understand the price of their safety well and will be ready to pay for it.

Galileo is a pure marketing and advertising gimmick, there is no working model in nature. With this myth, competitors are trying to postpone the revolution that Galileo will inevitably make in the world of dive computers. This product should not be considered a fantasy, it is already a reality. The serial production of the computer has already begun, the computer can be ordered, and it is possible to do this in Russia as well. Naturally, the release of such a revolutionary product is inevitably accompanied by excitement, and the increased demand causes a certain deficit. But we must take into account that Galileo is going to Switzerland, the volume of products does not correspond to the volume of consumer goods. So, willy-nilly, those wishing to buy Galileo will have to wait. You should not give in to live queues or offers to make a deposit from unknown persons, it should be borne in mind that the list of authorized dealers is available and published on the Russian Galileo Team website, it is better to trust reliable suppliers and their conditions. And all Galileo market news is covered on the site.

Galileo is very difficult to manage. The mobile phone also has many functions, but their abundance does not shock the majority of users, the same picture will be with Galileo. The computer has a friendly interface and detailed instructions that will help even an inexperienced user who is not familiar with this kind of technique to master this tool. And official dealers are planning to hold special master classes on working both with a computer and with its software.

Galileo is not recommended for beginner divers. Novice divers often try to save money on the essentials. However, if you do not take into account the issues of economy, then it is easy to prove the use of the device by a novice diver. Firstly, the device is equipped with a Russian interface, alarms are also given in a language that we understand, which will eliminate the misinterpretation of signals in critical situations at depth. Secondly, Galileo strictly monitors the diver's behavior underwater. The computer has 11 permissible ascent rate levels, while other manufacturers are limited to a maximum of three. Thirdly, the heart rate sensor allows you to take into account the condition of the diver, monitoring pre-stress states, making it possible to conduct training with breath control. Fourth, Galileo will allow, with the help of his own microprogram, to avoid the situation when the air suddenly runs out. The considered algorithm for suppressing microbubbles leads to the fact that with the help of a computer, a beginner immediately gets used to the correct dive profiles. Do not forget that Galileo is also a compass-navigator, logbook, planner and pressure gauge - all these functions turn the computer into an indispensable dive guide. An important feature is Galileo's ability to control the volume of air in a partner's tank, which provides great opportunities for family diving. The user can change the batteries while fully preserving the information, since such operations use non-volatile memory. The configuration of the display can be customized by choosing the size of letters, fields for displaying information, options for entering personal data. Finally, the creators promise that even after a year or two of active use of the computer, the diver will be able to outgrow his capabilities, therefore, regardless of experiments, Galileo will successfully serve his faithful service.
